E5TV: Breaking News @ ENTER5

Toghether with the Czech artist Darina Alster, I will present a new work of ours: E5TV – Breaking News at the Datapolis Exhibition in the National Technical Library. From April 14 – 17, 2011 there will be the 5th ENTER Festival in Praha / Czech Republic. It is labeled ENTER: DATAPOLIS | 5TH ART | SCI | TECH BIENNALE PRAGUE at National Technical Library / Cross Club / Archa Theatre.

E5TV is a TV-Set broadcasting a live television news program with custom live generated RSS news feed overlays from the internet in czech and english language. The RSS feeds are generated from real news sources, but slightly randomized. Thus the word “Breaking News” gets a whole new connotation. Especially together with the live pictures and overall changing contents, there is a constant new meaning that’s created within the viewer.

While there is a real live TV in the background, the scrambled RSS-News are being read by a synthetic computer voice. This version of the work was developed in cooperation with Darina Alster, who was working on the hardware. The broken case should hint at the damaged news, though I also learned how hard it is to damage a flat screen display! Surprisingly it took quite some force and duration to leave a during damage.

The ENTER5 Exhibition in the NTK Gallery was really great, there were lots of extremely interesting works, so I definitely recommend looking out for the ENTER5 documentation from CIANT. In the images above you see works from Akitoshi Honda (glographer) showing a camera with which you can view images of the world, depending on where you look at and zoom in – and “kaza midori” from Hide Ogawa showing the direction of visitors from the ENTER Website. I felt a little sad for the goldfish in “machine 2 fish” from Dardex Mort2Faim Art group, which had a moveable robot as a prosthesis to move around the space. Though I found it a bit shaky and I would definitely be frightened if I were the goldfish. Maybe they could make it a bit more comfortable in the next version?

Also interesting were “Rambler“, a twittering shoe (“Tap…tap…”) from Ricardo O’Nasciemento & Tiago Martins and “Vibrator” from Prokop Bartonícek, that is connected to one of the busiest porn servers in the world and vibrates related to the most requested video sequences.

Also very intense was the symposium, esp. the talk about the egypt revolution and the role of social media. Especially interesting were the talks of Erik Conrad and Mark Shepard from the University at Buffalo, New York; Erik concentrates on his work about tactile sensations and Mark Shepard is well known due to his projects “Sentient City” and the nice iPhone App “Serendipitor” (yay! download it!).

The rest of the most important media festival in the Czech Republic (organized by CIANT) provides a diverse program consisting of a unique exhibition, workshops, a symposium and unforgettable audiovisual and dance performances – that is this year´s edition of Art|Tech Biennale ENTER which puts all these events under the common title Datapolis. This term, according to the organizers, refers to contemporary art as well as to art of our future, and works a great deal with the human relationship to both the environment in the broad sense and to contemporary cityscapes in the narrow sense. The above mentioned exhibition will take place in the unique and widely recognized building of National Technical Library whereas the dance performance night will be hosted by Archa Theatre and the night of audiovisual performances – RESET Night – will be opened for public on Saturday night in the Prague´s popular spot of alternative culture and electronic music – Cross Club.
